Pickett Qualifies For Masters In 400 Meters

The 13 final qualifiers of the EHS Track and Field team competed in the CIF Sac Joaquin Division 5 Sections on Tuesday, May 15 and Thursday, May 17.

Junior Zach Pickett was fifth in the 400 meters and is the lone qualifier for the Cougars, continuing on to compete in the CIF Masters meet at Elk Grove High School on Thursday, May 24. Only the top five times and marks overall in both divisions 4 and 5 move on to the masters meet. Pickett’s time of 51.60 was the fifth fastest time allowing him to continue competing.

In the D5 sections, senior Shelby McCune medaled in the discus taking fourth place with a throw of 94’08”. Rex Robbins, Juan Lopez, Xavier Chavez and Pickett ran 3:33.76 in the 4x400m relay, their fastest time of the season earning them a fourth place finish, the boys 4x100m relay (Robbins, Christian Brunetti, Thaddeus Stern and Jake Lewis) placed fifth, Lopez was seventh in the 1600m (4:46.53) and eighth in the 800m (2:04.29); the girls 4x100m (Gabby Rigg, Jackie Lau, Alex Titsworth and Jessikka Gonzales) were seventh, senior Gonzales finished fifth in the high jump, 12th in the long jump, and 13th in the triple jump.

Brunetti was eighth in the triple jump and senior Lau just missed qualifying for Thursday’s finals in the 100 meters.

“It was a good two days of competition for the kids, and they finished up their season well,” said Coach Carrie Nash. “We are really excited that Zach has qualified for masters, he has had a great season and continues to improve when it counts.”

The CIF Masters will be this Thursday and Friday, May 24 and 25 at Elk Grove High School.
