Local AAUW Hosts Career Development Grant Recipient

Members, guests and prospective members of the American Association of University Women, Oakdale-Riverbank-Escalon Branch won’t want to miss the chance to meet one of AAUW’s 2017-2018 Career Development Grant recipients at the upcoming March 10 brunch. AAUW Career Development Grants assist women who are preparing to advance or change their careers or to re-enter the workforce

Elk Grove resident and grant recipient, Cherone Cabezudo is pursuing a master’s degree in education/teaching at the University of San Francisco. A native of Kingston, Jamaica, Cabezudo learned about how access to education is intrinsic to a higher quality of life. Her previous work with Bay Area youth, particularly minority girls in the juvenile justice system, led her to actively pursue a master’s degree in education with dual teaching credentials in science and multiple subjects at the University of San Francisco. Her scholarship focuses on social justice issues in primary and secondary education, while advocating for equal and equitable access to STEM, Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, education for ethnic minorities and girls. In her free time, Cabezudo loves to keep active and enjoys traveling the world, exploring new and exciting places while learning and appreciating the beauty and complexity of diverse cultures.

For the 2017-18 academic year AAUW awarded a total of $3.7 million through six fellowships and grants programs to more than 250 scholars, research projects, and programs promoting education and equity for women and girls. AAUW is one of the world’s leading supporters of graduate women’s education, having awarded more than $100 million in fellowships, grants, and awards to 12,000 women from more than 140 countries since 1888.
