They have been coming to Hula’s on Jackson Avenue in Escalon since early June, spending their Friday nights this summer displaying their classic cars, refurbished trucks, souped up scooters and more.
This Friday, Sept. 2 will be the final Friday night ‘Pre-Cruise’ gathering before the annual Escalon Lions Club Autumn Cruise, set for Saturday, Sept. 10 in the city’s Main Street Park.
Organizers said the Friday nights have seen pretty steady attendance, with a number of awards presented each week. The only ‘down’ times have been when the Hula’s gathering conflicted with another major car show in the area or when the temperatures soared well past 100 degrees.
Music, food, a chance to visit with fellow car enthusiasts and the opportunity to admire some classics is what draws people to the pre-cruise events, and Lions Club members said it also helps keep their Autumn Cruise going strong. The money raised provides scholarships to graduating Escalon High School seniors. The Class of 2016, which graduated in June, just as the Friday night pre-cruise events were beginning, received a total of 20 $1,500 scholarships through the Lions Club.
At the main event in the park on Sept. 10, there will be over 70 separate awards presented in addition to vendors, prize drawings throughout the day, the show and shine, car judging, a fashion show, food and more. DJ Gene Adams keeps the music flowing throughout the day as well. Hours for the Autumn Cruise, now in its 23rd year, are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
