Efforts Aimed At Supporting Troops

Local resident Shari White has continued to send care packages to troops overseas, with her son Brandon O'Hanley among the recipients. He is serving with the 3rd ID 7th Infantry A Co., currently with a home base in Afghanistan.

White, who lives in Escalon, has been helping put together care packages for O'Hanley's unit and others, giving them a taste of home while they serve overseas. She is hoping especially to make a difference this summer, with needs including funds for postage, snack items and a small dorm-type refrigerator to help keep drinks and snacks cool.

“It's slow, but steady,” White said of donations coming in to help with the project. “We're looking for donations of any kind, we can use large flat rate boxes from the post office, donations for postage.”

White tries to get a couple of shipments of care packages out each month, with her son's unit expected to be in Afghanistan until December or January.

“We are doing this now for this group of boys,” she explained of the care packages, but said she doesn't want to stop when her son returns. She hopes to keep the effort going, taking on another unit.

“If people have names of other soldiers serving, they can let me know,” White said, noting that making sure the service members have a 'taste of home' from time to time is important. “It means so much to them.”
