Datebook lists upcoming events and items of interest for residents of Escalon, Farmington, Collegeville and the surrounding area.

 

Escalon High School Drama class members are putting on a Drama Showcase on Wednesday, Dec. 13 from 1:15 p.m. to 3:05 p.m. at the school. Students in the Drama class have created original scripts, or modified previous stories to create their performance. There will be several different performances and students have been working on the production for the past month.

Christmas Eve Services at Saron Lutheran Church are on the schedule and they include time changes for this year. The morning service on Sunday, Dec. 24 will be at 9:30 a.m. with a Traditional Communion Liturgy. Early evening service will be at 5 p.m. and will be a Candlelight Service with Communion. All are welcome to join the congregation for these services; Saron Lutheran is at 1742 North St., Escalon.

The Escalon Scottish Cultural Association, a new group, will gather for a meeting on Thursday, Dec. 14 at the Escalon Library on Second Street.

Farmington United Methodist Church invites the community to bring the whole family and join them on Sunday evening, Dec. 17 for a free dinner in the social hall. Dinner will be served at 5 p.m., followed promptly at 6 p.m. with the early Christmas Eve Candlelight and Carols Service.

Sierra Repertory Theatre’s ‘Another Night Before Christmas’ is playing at the East Sonora Theatre through Saturday, Dec. 23. Shows are on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays at 2 p.m.; Fridays at 7 p.m. and Saturdays at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Admission ranges from $20 for children 17 and under to $37 for general admission, with adult and senior prices varying depending on day and time of performance. Escalon United Methodist Church will open their Fellowship Hall at 2000 Jackson Ave., Escalon, on Sunday, Dec. 17 from noon to 1 p.m. for shoppers to come in and peruse and purchase the items.

TOPS, Take Off Pounds Sensibly, meets every week on Mondays at 9 a.m. at Community United Methodist Church in Oakdale, 1480 Poplar. Visitors are always welcome and the first meeting is free. Oak Park Ice Arena’s Try Skating For Free program is the perfect place to start for young aspiring skaters or hockey players at the beginner’s level. The free program is for kids 10 and under and teaches the most basic of skills – from getting up after a fall to skating in different directions. The local REO Speechtrain Toastmasters Club gathers for regular meetings every Wednesday morning, 6:30 a.m. to 7:45 a.m., at Perko’s Cafe, Patterson and Oakdale roads, Riverbank. This is a fun way to learn the self-confidence and skills needed for public speaking. All are invited to come and check out the group. The next meeting will be Wednesday, Dec. 20.
