An informational meeting for local junior and senior high school girls regarding the Miss Escalon Pageant is set for Wednesday, May 31 at 6 p.m. at Pizza Plus. Contestants must reside in the Escalon Unified School District or attend Escalon High School. If you want to represent your community as part of the 2017 Miss Escalon Court, come to the informational meeting and learn all about the pageant, which is hosted during Park Fete Week in July. The Escalon Library presents this year’s Summer Reading Program, “Build a Better World” from June 1 through July 31. The Summer Reading Program is to encourage everyone to read during the summer months. The library will host a variety of themed activities for children, teens, and adults that encourage and support a love of reading. Participants can win prizes for reaching their reading goals. All programs are free. The Escalon Branch Library is a part of the Stockton-San Joaquin County Public Library and is at 1540 Second St., Escalon. The first special summer program is scheduled for Wednesday, June 7 with shows at 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m., featuring Python Ron and his Reptile Kingdom.

Modesto Junior College Department of Art presents “A Mother’s Tears” art show featuring the paintings of Susan Levy, dedicated to the memory of her daughter Chandra Levy. The show runs through Thursday, June 1 in the MJC Art Gallery on the East Campus, 435 College Ave., Modesto. The gallery is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday and admission is free.

As part of Woodward Reservoir’s 100th season, Stanislaus County Parks and Recreation is hosting the Ultimate Boat & Sport Expo at the main boat ramp of the reservoir on Saturday, June 3 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The public is invited to come to the event for a day spent outdoors, viewing boats and sporting equipment, enjoying food and beverages, and spending quality time with friends and family. Woodward Reservoir is on 26-Mile Road, off Highway 120, north of Oakdale. Admission to the park is $10 per carload for Stanislaus County residents and $15 for out-of-county residents. There is no extra cost to attend the boat expo.

Happy and Healthy, a special program offered in cooperation with the Human Services Agency, is geared toward local senior citizens as a way to help them improve their health, one bite at a time. If you need simple ideas to eat healthier and tips to save time in the kitchen, come to the free class on Thursdays, June 1 and June 8 at noon at the Escalon Community Center. The local REO Speechtrain Toastmasters Club gathers for regular meetings every Wednesday morning, 6:30 a.m. to 7:45 a.m., at Perko’s Cafe, Patterson and Oakdale roads, Riverbank. This is a fun way to learn the self-confidence and skills needed for public speaking. All are invited to come and check out the group. The next meeting will be Wednesday, June 7. Come join the fun at the Escalon Youth Center for an outdoor theater experience, with a Free Community Movie Night planned next month. They will be showing Disney Pixar’s “Up” on a 30-foot screen for all to enjoy on Friday, June 23 from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. There will be no charge for enjoying the movie on the youth center’s lawn. Feel free to bring a blanket or lawn chairs to sit on for you and your family. The Youth Center will be open during this time for concessions as well.

Reserve your spot now in the Miss Escalon Paint and Mimosa Fundraiser, set for Saturday, June 24 at 10:30 a.m. at the Bavaro residence on Sexton Road. Tickets are $45 and may be purchased at https://www.paintnite.com/events/_1189252. Come support the 2017 Miss Escalon Pageant by spending a morning outside creating a beautiful painting while sipping mimosas (available to those 21 and older). The event features two hours of painting instruction, creating your own take-home painting on a 16-by-20 canvas, with painting supplies provided. Miss Escalon Pageant officials have paired with the event company Paint Nite to put on this fundraiser.
