Monday, May 26 is Memorial Day and will bring with it closures and ceremonies.

A legal holiday, all local city offices in Oakdale, Riverbank and Escalon are closed, in addition to state and federal offices. Banks are closed, there will be no mail delivery and businesses have the option of closing.

The offices of The Oakdale Leader, The Riverbank News and The Escalon Times will be closed for the day on Monday as well in observance of the Memorial Day holiday.

Many locations offer services to remember veterans; locally, the Escalon American Legion Gustafson Thompson Post 263 will host a Memorial Day Ceremony at Burwood Cemetery, off River Road. The service is set for 10:30 a.m. Monday and all are welcome to attend to honor veterans and their families.

Memorial Day is always observed on the fourth Monday in May.

In addition to the special Memorial day closures and ceremonies, there will be added police presence on the highways to help make for safer travel during the three-day holiday weekend that traditionally signals the start of summer.

Specifically, the California Highway Patrol throughout the Central valley will be conducting a specialized Motorcycle Safety Enforcement Operation on Friday, May 23 in an effort to lower death and injuries. Extra officers will be on duty patrolling areas frequented by motorcyclists and where motorcycle crashes occur. Officers will be looking for violations by drivers and riders alike that can lead to motorcycle crashes. They will be cracking down on both those operating regular vehicles and motorcycles who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol, speeding, making illegal turns, or any other dangerous violations.
