Escalon Fire Department is once again planning its 9-11 Memorial Service, with the ceremony staged at the firehouse on Coley Avenue.

Fire Chief Rick Mello said the solemn observance will be Thursday, Sept. 11 at 9:11 a.m., with those attending gathering near the flagpole in front of the bay doors to the firehouse.

The short service in the past has included an invocation, remarks from a guest speaker, a moment of silence to remember the tragic deaths because of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 and those that resulted from the ensuing War on Terror. Also remembered during the ceremony is the late James ‘Doc’ Layton, son of Escalon resident Brent Layton, who was killed in action in Afghanistan while tending to the wounds of fellow soldiers.

The service is open to all interested in the community.
