Local, national gas prices still on the rise

Average gasoline prices in Modesto have risen 14.8 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $5.90/gallon as of Sept. 21, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 201 stations in Modesto. Prices in Modesto are 49.7 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand $1.62/gallon higher than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has increased 30.7 cents compared to a week ago and stands at $6.49 per gallon.

The national average price of gasoline has risen 18.5 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $4.44/gallon. The national average is up 34.4 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands $1.30/gallon higher than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country.

GasBuddy price reports indicate the cheapest station in Modesto was priced at $5.49/gallon on Sept. 21 while the most expensive was $6.49, a difference of one dollar per gallon. The lowest price in the state was $4.39 while the highest was $8.74, a difference of $4.35/gallon.

Neighboring areas and their current gas prices include: Stockton - $5.94/gallon, up 20.0 cents from $5.74; Oakland - $6.19/, up 20.2 cents per gallon from $5.99; and San Jose - $6.13, up 19.2 cents per gallon from last week’s $5.94/gallon.

Historical gasoline prices in Modesto and the national average going back five years show the highest Modesto price was $5.32 per gallon on Sept. 21, 2023, with the U.S. average also highest on that date, at $3.83 per gallon.

Lowest average Modesto price was $4.27 per gallon on Sept. 21, 2021; lowest U.S. average on Sept. 21 was $3.14 per gallon, recorded in 2025.

“Average gasoline prices rose in virtually every state over the last week, with 45 states seeing increases of more than 3 cents per gallon, led by the Great Lakes region where refinery issues sent Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, and Wisconsin all up more than 30 cents per gallon,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.
