With a slight hike seen, average gasoline prices in Modesto were at $5.36 per gallon as of Aug. 31, rising 1.6 cents per gallon in the last week. The information is based on GasBuddy’s survey of 201 stations in Modesto. Prices in Modesto are 10.1 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and stand $1.06/gallon higher than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has decreased 1.4 cents compared to a week ago and stands at $5.57 per gallon.

According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Modesto was priced at $4.97/gallon while the most expensive was $6.29, a difference of $1.32/gallon. The lowest price in the state was $4.39 while the highest was $9.79, a difference of $5.40/gallon.

The national average price of gasoline has fallen 3.2 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $4.01/gallon on Aug. 31. The national average is down 7.3 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands 86.2 cents per gallon higher than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country.

Neighboring areas and their current gas prices include: Stockton - $5.35, down 0.8 cents per gallon from $5.36; Oakland - $5.64, up 9.6 cents from last week’s $5.55; and San Jose - $5.59/gallon, up 8.3 cents per gallon from last week’s $5.50/gallon.

“Average gasoline prices fell in slightly more than half of states over the last week while diesel declined in roughly half, as oil prices moved lower and offered some modest relief at the pump,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “Over the weekend, the Trump administration struck a major deal with Venezuela, a signal that the White House remains concerned about elevated fuel prices — though in reality, any benefits from increased Venezuelan output will take years to fully materialize and are unlikely to move the needle in the near term.”

Historical gasoline prices in Modesto and the national average going back five years show the highest Modesto price of $5.07 per gallon was on Aug. 31, 2022, the same date as the highest U.S. average of $3.81 per gallon.

Lowest Modesto average was $4.26 per gallon, recorded on Aug. 31, 2021 while the lowest U.S. average was $3.15 per gallon on Aug. 31, 2025.
