International Astronomy Day Observed

All in the community are encouraged to attend a special event, Astronomy Day in the Park, set for Saturday, May 7 in the Nature Center at Oak Grove Regional Park, 4520 W. Eight Mile Road, Stockton.

This is a free event, though there is a $6 cash parking fee. The event begins at 4 p.m. Saturday and is presented by the Stockton Astronomical Society, Oak Grove Nature Center and San Joaquin County Parks.

Featured during this celebration of International Astronomy Day will be a program on “What You Can See in the Night Sky Without a Telescope” with that event set for 4:30 p.m. in the Nature Center Classroom. Put on as an ‘Astronomy 101’ presentation by members of the Stockton Astronomical Society, there will be a Question and Answer session following the program.

You can also view the sun and moon via solar telescope until 7:30 p.m. and there will be astronomy activities, crafts, games and more. After sunset, you can view the night sky through giant telescopes. Blankets or lawn chairs welcome.
