Second grade students at Dent Elementary have completed another season of giving through their ‘Care Packages’ effort.

The grade level has been doing the holiday care packages for the military for at least the last seven years, teachers noted, and all second grade classes are involved.

“We give about two weeks for students to bring in donations such as toiletries, snacks, magazines, word search books,” explained teacher Katie Bartelink. “Students donate Halloween candy, Christmas hats and stockings, decor. The students write letters thanking them for their service.”

Teachers for the Dent Second Grade Team are: Mrs. Pettit, Mrs. Shultz, Mrs. Taylor, Mrs. Campbell, Mrs. Lueck and Mrs. Bartelink. This year, they were able to fill and send 10 boxes for the project.

Families can also give monetary donations to help ship the packages; some go overseas and some go to military service personnel stateside, with the goal of providing them all with some holiday cheer.

“We map out on the world map where the boxes are going,” Bartelink added. “This year, we sent them in the states and also as far as Korea. We often get “thank you” letters and pictures in return and the students really love that.”
