Renewals have been sent out for local gardeners who have had boxes at the Escalon Community Garden, but officials said there are still some boxes remaining that can be rented.
“We have approximately 12 to 15 boxes available, mixed between the raised wooden beds and the metal beds,” said Dee Ann Blowers, who helps coordinate the garden box rentals. “This is an Escalon Strong project. The Seventh Day Adventist Church donated the property, with Escalon Strong building the actual gardens.”
All available boxes rent for $50 per year and are available to rent throughout the year, with the ‘membership drive’ of sorts on now. Some growers have already renewed for another year but boxes are available to those interested in doing some gardening, whether it be growing vegetables, fruits or flowers.
“The wooden raised beds are four-by-12, and the raised metal containers are four-by-eight,” Blowers added. “All boxes rent for $50 per year.”
The Community Garden features some growers who garden not only for themselves, but also share the bounty with local food banks or other gardeners. The garden boxes are behind the church at 2149 Jackson Ave., and the site is open for most of the week, with a closure only from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday.
“Winter gardens are good for onions, garlic, broccoli, carrots and other plants,” noted Blowers.
Escalon Strong provides the boxes, soil, and watering system, which is on a timer for each box.
Blowers said she saw plenty of squash, tomatoes and peppers during this past spring and summer, along with lots of flowers in bloom.
