Volunteer opportunities to help out at the Shumway Oak Grove Regional Park, 4520 W. Eight Mile Road, Stockton, are scheduled for the third Saturdays of September and October. Meet up at the Nature Center on Sept. 19 and/or Oct. 17 to help San Joaquin County Parks personnel keep the trails weeded and trimmed, along with prepping for fall planting in the Pollinator Garden.

The work days runs from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.; there will be some supplies to share but it is also recommended to bring your own personal gloves and small hand tools. Wear closed-toed shoes, bring sunscreen and bug spray. Children are welcome, with adult supervision, but no pets are allowed.

If this is your first time volunteering, email OakGroveNatureCenter@gmail.com before the Garden Work Party date to receive park entry instructions.

Also on Saturday, Sept. 19, it’s the next Astronomy in the Park night at Oak Grove. See M13 (Star Cluster in Hercules) and M57 (Ring Nebula), along with Saturn and the moon. Stargazing courtesy of giant telescopes provided by the Stockton Astronomical Society begins at 7:05 p.m., bring a flashlight and a blanket or lawn chairs. This is a free event, through there is a $6 cash parking fee at the park.
