Just a reminder, the next in the series of city 'furlough days' is set for this Friday, May 20. It is the next to last scheduled for the 2010-2011 fiscal year, with the final furlough day on Friday, June 17.

The once-a-month furlough days may continue next year, but that is undetermined at this point, as work on the city budget is in the preliminary stages.

City council members, in fact, met in a budget workshop session on Monday, May 16 prior to the regular scheduled council meeting and City Manager Henry Hesling said the budget figures are slowly coming together. The city's new fiscal year starts July 1.

Monday night's session included recognition of the Escalon FFA, for its four-year run of sending officers to serve on the statewide team and for continued success as a program; public hearings for the various city special assessment districts and the review of monthly reports from the police and recreation departments.

Hesling said there was also some discussion due on possible changes in the supervisorial districts in San Joaquin County, based on the figures from the latest census. Council members were also slated to discuss a change in planning commission membership requirements, to reflect that all commission members must live within the city limits.

Meanwhile, applications are now available to local service clubs and community organizations looking to run one of the 'Safe and Sane' fireworks booths for the Fourth of July holiday. Three booths are available and completed applications will be randomly drawn to see which groups will get the booths this year. Applications are due by May 31 with the drawing scheduled for June 2. Pick up applications at the city Recreation Department, 2040 McHenry.
