From "Doc Alders, Farmington's Lone Eagle". CALIFORNIA GOLD mining went into another boom in 1934. President Roosevelt raised the price of gold from $20.67 per ounce to $35 per ounce. The Alders brothers and Lloyd Mattesich became partners in a hard rock mine outside of Columbia. The gold they got out of the mine was nothing to speak of. It was an old mine that had been worked in the early days. A couple of men had worked it before, and had taken out about $80,000 the first eighty feet. The Alders brothers and Lloyd Mattesich were able to get a lease and figured they would go down below the eighty feet and with luck would pick up a stringer again. However, when they got down about a hundred and eighty feet the ground got very bad. Therefore, they were broke and had to give it up.
