San Joaquin County Sheriff's Detectives arrested Joe Anthony Correia, 27, of Escalon on Friday, July 29 for the death of his girlfriend's three year-old son.

Sheriff's Department officials report that, on Saturday, July 23, the child was rushed to a hospital in Modesto for an unknown ailment; he died there later. An autopsy revealed that the three-year-old succumbed to a traumatic blow to the abdomen.

Correia was booked into the San Joaquin County Jail shortly after 2 p.m. on July 29.

According to the Sheriff's Department website, Correia is being held on a single felony count of 273AB, Child Abuse resulting in death (Child under 8). He is being held without bail.

He was scheduled for his next court appearance in the Stockton Courthouse on Tuesday, Aug. 2 at 1:30 p.m., past press time for The Times.

Sheriff's Department Public Information Officer, Deputy Les Garcia, said the incident occurred in the county area, in the 24000 block of East Lone Tree Road.

"In these types of cases, there's really not a lot we can share," Garcia said, other than to reiterate that the child was taken to the hospital and pronounced death there of the traumatic injury.
