County Distributing Free Naloxone Nasal Spray
Overdose chart

Instituting a new program for 2022, San Joaquin County Public Health Services (PHS) is rolling out a free naloxone nasal spray program for anyone concerned about family or friends at risk of opioid overdose. Provided by PHS San Joaquin County Opioid Safety Coalition, this program offers easy-to-use naloxone—a timely reversal drug used to prevent opioid overdose deaths.

If you have a loved one dealing with opioid use or a history of street drug use, visit PHS at 420 S. Wilson Way, Stockton at any time Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. to receive a free naloxone nasal spray.

New data from the Centers for Disease Control points to a deepening crisis involving illegally manufactured fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that can be 50 times more potent than heroin. Counterfeit pills containing fentanyl are routinely being sold on the streets, putting unsuspecting young people and others in grave danger of fatal overdose. Fentanyl overdose deaths are sharply increasing in the county, with the 2021 fentanyl-related overdose death rate more than 20 times higher than in 2018.

“This sharp rise in opioid-related deaths demonstrates a strong need for increased supplies of naloxone in the community,” shared Dr. Maggie Park, Public Health Officer at PHS. “This community program—coupled with the substance-use treatment resources provided by the Opioid Safety Coalition—offers families and friends a way to help prevent overdoses and the loss of loved ones.”
