Collection Due By Firefighters

After having to postpone their first planned 'Fill The Boot' drive this year, Escalon firefighters will take up residence at the intersection of Highway 120-McHenry Avenue and Escalon-Bellota Road this weekend.

They will have their turnout boots in hand, seeking donations from motorists to send to the Firefighters Burn Institute to help support programs and services of the organization. Among those are helping burn victims needing treatment and sending young burn survivors to a special summer camp.

Hours for the weekend drive are Saturday, April 9 and Sunday, April 10 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Fire officials said delays in getting needed permits from Caltrans forced the re-scheduling, as well as bad weather on the first planned weekend effort.

Now, organizers are hoping the traffic will be heavy, the donations generous, as they look to collect for a good cause.

Motorists who give will receive a flyer to place in their dashboard, visible through the windshield, so they aren't asked again if they come back through the intersection at another time during the weekend.

Last year's effort, over the Valentine's Day weekend in February, brought in just a little under $16,600.
