Charter Academy Preps For Opening

A new Escalon Charter Academy will be offered to students in grades kindergarten through eight for the 2012-2013 school year.

The Escalon Charter Academy is a Charter School, chartered by the Escalon Unified School District, due to open for the coming school year in August. It will be set up as a 'brick and mortar' academy, with students able to attend classes at existing Escalon district schools under their charter enrollment.

Information about the process is available on the district website, escalonusd.org.

School District Superintendent Ron Costa said developing and offering the Charter Academy gives parents another option for schooling for their children, those that might want to have their children enrolled in the district.

"The website has a section for FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) and information on registration," Costa said.

Priority enrollments are already being accepted. Goals are to have both an elementary and a middle school program, with music, seventh and eighth grade athletics, after school programs and a student-centered education program.

Escalon Charter Academy will serve K-8 students at three current Escalon campuses, Costa said, with classes at Collegeville Elementary, Dent Elementary and El Portal Middle School.

More information is available by contacting the district office at 838-3591.

Costa said the district is responding to requests for a Charter School offering, and feel they can fill the need at existing sites, making the most effective use of space and staff.
