Caltrans Sees Flexible Work Windows Initiative Success
CA State

In the last five years, over 3,000 people nationwide lost their lives in work zone collisions and more than 85 percent of them were the motoring public. At the 2018 Caltrans Safety Summit, Caltrans made a call to action and is implementing three new safety initiatives to end work zone fatalities.

One of those initiatives is Flexible Work Windows. This reduces the number of days crews are exposed to traffic. Crews can work longer hours and fewer days on a project, as opposed to working fewer hours and more days.

Caltrans officials said they know time is important to motorists, and they want to keep you moving. Flexible work windows get the job done. It may be a bitter pill to swallow, but it’s the right prescription to improve area roads, faster and safer, while saving money.

One death on the state highway system, whether it’s a Caltrans employee, a resident or someone visiting California, officials added, is one death too many.
