Modesto Junior College’s Positive People Speaker Series will be presented virtually on Thursday, March 4 at 6 p.m.

The next engaging Positive People Guest Speaker will be Dr. Amelia Herrera. During the last 14 years of her teaching career at Davis High School, she has been privileged to learn from a globally diverse population of students. These students have shared priceless lessons about violence, war, peace, humanity, and most importantly — unconditional love. Dr. Herrera believes that students who are most in need of care, deserve a quality education with the most thoughtful, philosophical, and loving guidance of caring teachers. She has strived to become this role model for students.

As an adjunct professor at CSU, Stanislaus, Dr. Herrera provided guidance to pre-service teachers preparing for bilingual and multilingual education. She writes educational policy recommendations for transformational social, emotional learning; promoting equity and excellence among children, young people, and adults — focusing on issues of race and ethnicity to address broader ranges of inequities. She is a national education policy advisor for Teach Plus; an organization dedicated to the advancement of equitable education policy directed and written by teachers. Dr. Herrera also serves as the state treasurer for United Black Student Unions and is the proprietor of RootEd: A platform, dedicated to providing daily student-friendly moments of meditation and mindfulness aligned with current social, emotional learning domains.

Dr. Herrera is the co-author of Community Equity Audits: Communities and Schools Working Together to Eliminate the Opportunity Gap. This epidemiological study of Modesto; covers history, current systems, and structures contributing to the expanding gap in educational equity. Dr. Herrera earned a Bachelor’s degree in English and Chicano, Latino Studies, a Master’s degree in Education, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership.
