Popular Science Education Series Returns To State

Science on Screen pairs popular Hollywood films with cutting-edge science in a series of free programs coming up at The State Theatre, 1307 J St., Modesto.

The series opener is scheduled for Saturday, March 10.

The State has once again been awarded a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan and Coolidge Corner foundations. The nonprofit, independent cinema was selected – for the sixth consecutive year – as a grantee and presenter of Science on Screen. Presenting partner, the Lawrence Livermore National Lab, provides the accomplished speakers, all of whom are scientists at the forefront of research in their respective fields. The films back up the science in the presentation, and all are PG- or PG-13-rated so high school, college and university students (as well as adults) are encouraged to attend.

The first of the season’s four SoS programs will be Real Genius on March 10, followed by Medicine Man on March 17; Honey, I Shrunk The Kids on April 14; and Hidden Figures on April 21. The State has added a new feature for eager students this year. Between the presentation and start of the film, they can now “Meet a Scientist” and delve further into the day’s topic. Doors open at 2 p.m., the presentation is at 2:30 p.m. and the movies begin at 3:30 p.m.

Back by popular demand is the $500 toward science equipment to the school with the most students in attendance over the four presentations.
