Throughout December, the State Theatre at 1307 J St., Modesto, will be offering a variety of holiday-themed films and Christmas classics.

A couple of the upcoming shows include Remember The Night on Sunday, Dec. 10 and A Christmas Story, Dec. 18 through Dec. 22.

Remember The Night, Sunday, Dec. 10 at 2 p.m.

The first of many films co-starring Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray, Remember the Night is both a romantic comedy and a trial drama. In this 1940 black-and-white film, Stanwyck plays Lee Leander, a young woman accused of shoplifting during the Christmas season, and MacMurray plays Jack Sargeant, the DA tasked with prosecuting her. Things become more complicated as the pair spend more time together, and love blossoms. Written by the talented Preston Sturges, Remember the Night has been a lasting love story, adapted in multiple formats since its debut as a film.

A Christmas Story, Monday, Dec. 18 through Friday, Dec. 22

Both warmly nostalgic and darkly humorous, A Christmas Story deserves its status as a holiday perennial so The State is bringing it back to the Big Screen where it’s seldom seen. In the 1940s, in the town of Hammond, 9-year-old Ralphie wants one thing for Christmas – an official Red Ryder BB rifle. When he asks his mother for the BB gun, she says, “No, you’ll shoot your eye out.” When he writes an essay about it at school, his teacher says the same thing. And then Santa concurs, “You’ll shoot your eye out, kid.” Ralphie fears that he’ll never get the BB gun for Christmas. But there may be a surprise in store for him. Starring Peter Billingsley as Ralphie Parker, Ian Petrella as his brother, Randy, and Melinda Dillon and Darren McGavin as his mom and dad.
