Calling all prospective volunteers: Columbia State Historic Park is looking for you.

Being sought are individuals with a passion for gold rush history, costuming, living history re-enactments, special events, museum staffing, gardening, construction, school group and public tour leaders. This is a great opportunity to get behind-the-scenes knowledge of the largest gold rush town still in existence. Work with the park staff on special events to accomplish exciting reenactments of the gold rush experience. Dress up in 1860s costumes and staff venues such as the 1860s schoolhouse, Wells Fargo office, bowling alley, and firehouse, and educate visitors about the life of a merchant at the California store. Join their gardening docents to beautify flowerbeds, or help the construction crew as they spiff up the buildings for Diggins Tent Town.

Volunteering at Columbia is an amazing opportunity for docents to make the past come alive for the people of the present. Serving as a docent at Columbia also provides the opportunity to meet new friends, learn the history of the park and get a chance to get involved in the park in a way that suits you best.

Those interested in learning more about the docent program should plan to attend the Meet & Greet on Saturday, Jan. 5 at 10 a.m. in Eagle Cottage for an overview of the program. Refreshments will be served. Training starts Jan. 19 and runs through Feb. 23 on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
