Pushed to four games in one match and five in the other, both still went in the win column for the Escalon Lady Cougars varsity volleyball team.

They hosted Oakdale on Monday, Aug. 31 and came away with a 3-1 win, 25-20, 25-23, 23-25, 25-17.

"Our defense was what won that game," said head coach Teresa Williamson.

Everybody was digging balls and we made fewer errors than they (Oakdale) did."

Katie Aprile had another solid outing for her team with 35 assists, two blocks and three saves. Kaitlyn Brayton had 24 kills and one block and Lindsey Anderson had 32 digs.

"Wednesday at Summerville we went to five games," Williamson noted. "We lost the first two and we won it in five."

After going down 21-25, 13-25 in the first two, Williamson challenged her team to step up and they responded, sending the Bears to defeat by taking the next three games, 25-22, 25-16, 16-14.

"I was so proud of the heart they showed, the dedication to the team," the coach explained of how the girls came together. "It's not common to lose the first two and then win. I don't think they realized what they accomplished."

Brayton stayed in the back row due to some soreness, helping her team out by serving. But she wasn't at her traditional spot to get the kills.

"Kristi (Rigg) and Casey (Schmidig) really stepped it up, they played on the outside and they filled Kaitlyn's shoes," Williamson noted.

Rigg had 16 kills and Schmidig added 24 digs. It was a huge match for Aprile, with 45 assists, Brayton added four aces and Morgan Jensen had three blocks.

JV action saw the girls win 27-25, 25-12 over Oakdale with Megan Faria getting six kills and one block, Shaylynn Beam with 17 assists and Hannah Beeler with three aces.

They lost a close match to Summerville, 23-25, 23-25 with a makeshift line up that saw Faria notching nine kills, Beam 14 assists and Morgan Eisenga getting three aces.

For the freshmen, they struggled against Oakdale, losing in two, but battled to a 2-1 win at Summerville in a better contest.

Action this week has the girls at Calaveras on Wednesday, Sept. 9 and the varsity in the Golden Valley Tournament on Friday and Saturday, with the JV at the Oakdale Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 12.

Trans-Valley League play starts on the road, Tuesday, Sept. 15 at Ripon Christian.
