Escalon High School’s track and field team hosted two meets this past week. Wednesday, April 29 was a dual meet against Orestimba, and Friday was the Trans-Valley League frosh/soph championship event.

Head coach Arend Jones said the Cougars hosted the Warriors for the last dual meet of the season and honored the senior members of the EHS squad on April 29. Seniors recognized were Olivia Aceves, Gracie Airola, Annabelle Armstrong, Jasmine Barron, Taylor Gillihan, Gloria Segura, Marissa Terry, Natalie Worley, Drew Bellinger, Jose De Luna, Jesus Garcia, Theodore Harp, Co Northcutt, and Otto Perreira.

In the competition, both the boys and girls were winners over Orestimba.

BOYS

Escalon 88, Orestimba 48

Shot put was swept by junior Jaecy Aldasoro, junior Caleb Boatman, and sophomore Kolten Kjellberg; discus was swept by Aldasoro, Boatman, and sophomore Ryan Huebner.

Pole vault was swept by senior Theodore Harp, sophomore Rigoberto Ramirez, and junior Jacob Hernandez-Munoz.

High jump was swept by sophomore Ian Trejo, freshman Lucas Trejo, and sophomore DJ Bass.

Seniors: Otto Perreira, second, 400, PR with a time of 54.14 and third in the 200; Jose De Luna, second, 800 and third, 110 hurdles; Drew Bellinger, second, 110 hurdles; Co Northcutt, third, long jump.

Sophomores: Jake Ferreira, 100-meter sprint, first, and second in long and triple jump; Ian Trejo, second, 100-meter sprint and 300 hurdles; Fidel Segura, first in the 200 and 400 meters with a PR of 52.47 in the 400; Ethan Young, second, and Mateo Estrada, third, in the 3200-meter run.

Freshmen: Yandel Andrade, third in the 400 with a PR of 56.60; Moises Cortes placed third in both the 800-meter run and triple jump; Alden Schultz, third, 1600 meters.

GIRLS

Escalon 68, Orestimba 67

Shot put and discus were swept by seniors Gracie Airola, Marissa Terry, and Gloria Segura.

High jump was swept by junior Rachelle Barker, sophomore Emma Strong, and freshman Madlin Teixeira.

Pole vault was swept by sophomore Georgia Northcutt, senior Annabelle Armstrong, and junior Rachelle Barker.

Seniors: Annabelle Armstrong placed third in the 100 meters with a PR of 13.38.

Juniors: Peyton Houser Keaton, second, 1600 meters, third, 3200-meter run; Victoria Calderon, second, 3200-meter run; Emilia Jimenez, third, triple jump.

Sophomores: Georgia Northcutt, first, 400-meter sprint; Ronni Keo, third, long jump.

Freshmen: Sandra Rowe, first, 200 meters; Abigail Perreira, third, 200 meters; Paityn Tagliabue, third, 800 meter run with a PR of 2:40.34; Monique Coelho, third, 1600-meter run; Ava Rodriguez, first, 100 and second, 300 hurdles.

“On Friday, the Cougars hosted the TVL Frosh/Soph Championship meet,” Jones explained. “The Cougar girls defended their title with a second consecutive win and the boys placed a respectable third.”

Escalon’s frosh/soph girls scored 131 points and Ripon finished second with 120.

Top performers for Escalon were:

Sophomores: Georgia Northcutt, first, pole vault; second in 400 meters with a PR of 1:01.69; Ava Rodriguez, first in 100, third in 300 hurdles; Karyna Dalpogetti, second, shot put and discus; Nadia Graham, third, discus, PR of 74 feet, 3.5 inches; Ronni Keo, first in high jump; Emma Strong, third in high jump.

Freshmen: Sandra Rowe, third, triple jump.

The 4x100 relay team placed second with sophomores Ava Rodriguez and Miley Krieger and freshmen Abigail Perreira and Sandra Rowe; the 4x400 relay team placed first with sophomores Addison Correia, Georgia Northcutt and Ava Rodriguez and freshman Sandra Rowe.

The Escalon boys were third with 96 points, behind Ripon, 110.5 and first place Sonora, 156.5.

Leading Escalon were:

Sophomores: Jake Ferreira, first, triple jump; second, 100 meters with a PR of 11.48; Fidel Segura, third, 200 and 400 meters; Ian Trejo, first in high jump, second in 300 hurdles; Ryan Huebner, second in discus with a PR of 114 feet 5.5 inches; Kolten Kjellberg, second, shot put with a PR of 40 feet and third in discus with a PR of 104 feet 8 inches.

The 4x100 relay team placed second with sophomores Valdemar Garcia, Ian Trejo, Carter Cummings and Jake Ferreira.

This week, the Cougars will compete at Ripon High School on Thursday, May 7 in the TVL Varsity Finals starting at 3 p.m. for Field events and 6 p.m. for Track events. Wednesday, May 13 features Divisionals at Riverbank High School.

TENNIS

Hosting Highlands on Friday, May 1 in Team Sections play, the Cougar tennis team came away with a decisive 8-1 win over the visitors. Nathan Rose and Brien Novetzke were winners in boys singles; while Chloe Green won in girls singles. The lone loss on the day for Escalon was at girls number one singles, Brianna Gallo. Boys doubles, Ben Ferreira and Logan Wentzell; Luca Cerasi and Conner McDowell, were winners along with the girls doubles teams of Emma Rangel and Marina Franzia, Haven MacKinnon and Brooklyn Dugo; and the mixed doubles team of Christian Ramirez and Alaina Mancilla.

For the individual sections, competition was Saturday, May 2 at MJC and Escalon had a pair of doubles teams move on. Ben Ferreira and Luca Cerasi took first by defeating Hughson 6-2, 6-2, while Emma Rangel and Nathan Rose were winners in mixed doubles, topping Ripon Christian 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 in the finals. Those teams each earned the number one seed for the upcoming Section tournament, My 18 and 19 at Oak Park in Stockton.

BASEBALL

It was a winning final week of the regular season for Escalon’s varsity baseball boys, as they swept Orestimba, 5-1, on the road on April 28 and then took a 10-6 win on the home field during Senior Day on Thursday, April 30. Seniors recognized were Logan Huebner, Ben Gonzalez, Wyatt Riesenbeck, Zach Wells, Andrew Armosino and Lorenzo Teixeira. Wrapping up Trans-Valley League play at 8-4 in league, Escalon enters the Sac-Joaquin Section Division 5 playoffs as the number eight seed in the 16-team bracket. They are scheduled to host number nine Casa Roble in a 4 p.m. game on Wednesday, May 6.

The JV boys, meanwhile, also swept Orestimba and put 39 runs on the board against the Warriors in their two games, with all Escalon players contributing in both contests. They were 24-4 winners on April 28 and came back with a 15-0 shutout at home to end the season strong on April 30.

SOFTBALL

Escalon’s varsity girls were 14-1 winners on Tuesday, April 28 as they hosted Sonora, a contest that also included recognition for the seniors for their many contributions over the years to the team. Honored were Madi Babasa, Peyton Merrill, and Lizzy Allan.

Then, it was off on the road to Hilmar, where the Lady Cougars took an 8-5 victory on Thursday, April 30, completing a 9-3 run through the Trans-Valley League, good for second place. They are 11-11 overall and are awaiting playoff seeding information.

At the JV level, the girls fell by a 19-7 final to Sonora on April 28 and also took a loss to Hilmar by a 14-4 decision to close out their season.

GOLF

Playing in the Trans-Valley Leage championship tournament on April 27 at Micke Grove, Escalon carded a team score of 481 to finish in fifth. Ripon was the league champion with a team score of 389, followed by Ripon Christian, 392; Sonora, 460; Hughson, 468; Hilmar, 468; then Escalon and Orestimba.

Brenden Berchtold paced the Escalon effort with a round of 88 on the day, 13th overall; followed by Donovan Martinez, 92; Joey Calcagno and George Harding, 98; Daniel Nixon, 105; and Matix Trimble, 119.
