Closing out the regular season on the links, Escalon’s varsity golf girls came away with top honors in the Valley Foothills League Tournament at Micke Grove. They played on the par 72 course on Monday, Oct. 16 and were 16 strokes better than second place Ripon.

Escalon carded a team score of 394. Ripon came in at 410, Bret Harte was at 419.

Madison Kindberg paced the Lady Cougars with an 84, followed by Mary Adams at 95, Mikayla Schut at 107, Ellie Cunningham at 108, Shelby McCune and Amanda Rickman rounding out the team effort with identical 112s.

“We took first place in the tournament and first place in the VFL north (division),” said head coach Kristie Cathcart.

The girls were scheduled to play Monday, Oct. 23 at Micke Grove for the Division 5 Tournament; results were not available at presstime.

“We were a few strokes better this tournament.  To win divisionals, we need to try to take a few more stokes off,” noted Cathcart. “During league tournaments, you take four of the six scores, at divisionals you take five of six.”

Escalon earned the VFL north championship with an overall record of 11-1; they also took first place in both the mid-season and season-ending tournaments.

As far as All League honorees, the Lady Cougars had a pair of players tapped.

“All league is based on points. For each match, the lowest score gets six points then five, four, three, two and one. League tournaments low score gets 12,” Cathcart explained. “All six EHS golfers had all-league points. The top 10 golfers in the league receive all-league honors. Madi was awarded the MVP and Mary Adams was all-league.”

Kindberg, at 96, earned max points. Adams had 53 points, Rickman earned 33, Schut had 28, Cunningham 24 and McCune earned 19 points.
