Cougars Defeat Bruins In Track, Field Action

On Wednesday, May 2 the Escalon High School track and field team successfully completed their final dual meet of the year at Riverbank High School. Both the boys and girls teams defeated their opponents.

The girls easily overpowered the Lady Bruins, putting up a final score of 84-51. The top three finishers in each event scored team points. Notable performances for the day came from senior Jessikka Gonzales who clutched a triple victory in the high, long and triple jumps, senior Shelby McCune coming away with a first place and personal best throw of 30-08 in the shot and a second place in the discus. Senior Jackie Lau helped champion both relay teams and earned a strong second in both the 100 and 200 meters, senior Gabby Rigg was first in the 400, third in the 200, and ran with both relays. Senior Annie Wyrick placed first in the 100m hurdles, second in the 300m hurdles, senior Ashley Mullan was third in the 1600, junior Leila Phillips third in triple jump, and sophomore Julia Casillas first in the 300m hurdles, second in the 100m hurdles.

Freshman Kalynn Cavanaugh took third in the 100 and second in the high jump (4-8.00), freshman Brianna Briones, first in the 1600 (5:48.25) and second in the 800, first in the 4x400 relay, and freshman Katie Avila took third in both the 100 and 300 hurdles.

The boys team also tamed their Bruin competitors and the final score was 76-60. Leading performances came from senior Thaddeous Stern, first in both 100 and 200, first with the 4x100 team, Zach Pickett first in the 400, first in high jump, third in the 200, and first with the 4x400m relay. Senior Rex Robbins was second in both the 200 and 400, first with the 4x100 and 4x400m relays, sophomore Juan Lopez was first in the 800 and second in the 1600, first with the 4x400 relay, senior Troy Bedell was second in the 3200 and third in the 1600, senior Christian Brunetti first in the 4x100, third in long and triple jumps, junior Xavier Chavez was third in the 400 and 800, first with the 4x400m relay. Junior Chase Granis was first in the long jump, sophomore Alex Mendoza second in triple jump, third in the 110 hurdles, freshman Gino Stern took second in pole vault, sophomore Max Teague was third in pole vault, freshman Ty Bashaw finished second in high jump and third in the 300 hurdles and junior Isaias Martinez was third in the 100 meters.

On Friday May 4, the EHS frosh-soph track and field teams competed in their final meet of the season. The TVL Frosh-Soph Championships was held at Ripon High School. Both teams finished fourth overall in the TVL.

“These frosh-soph teams have worked hard this year and have experienced a lot of growth. They set an example with their positive attitudes and eagerness to improve, they are a promising group and I have enjoyed coaching them,” said head Coach Carrie Nash.

The Varsity TVL Championships will be hosted at Riverbank on Thursday May, 10, with field events beginning at 3 p.m. and running events starting at 6 p.m.
