The Escalon Cougar track and field team took their varsity squad on the road Tuesday to Riverbank for the annual TVL Relays Meet. With every event on the track and in the field being a relay, “The returners had an opportunity to work together in competitions. They are off to a good start this season,” said head coach Carrie Nash.
Friday the Frosh/Soph team traveled to San Andreas to compete at the Calaveras Frosh/Soph Invitational.
“For many of the new athletes it was a chance to discover what track and field is all about,” said Nash.
Medals were awarded to the top five athletes in each event. Standout performances came from sophomore Brianna Briones capturing a first in the 800m (2:36.11) and second in the 1600m (5:40.69); sophomores Joshua Corrales and Christopher Borrego went second and fourth in the 400m with Corrales also finishing strong in the 200m (seventh). Sophomore Kalynn Cavanaugh was third in the long jump, fifth in high jump and seventh in the 100m. Freshman Anya Peeples captured a fourth in the shot put, freshman Edwin Salguero took fifth in the discus. Sophomore Alexis Barron earned a fifth in the 200m, sixth in the long jump and seventh in the triple jump. Sophomore Katie Avila was sixth in the 100m hurdles and seventh in the 300m hurdles. Freshman Cameron Loureiro was seventh in the shot put.
The track and field team will host its first league meet away at Hughson on Wednesday, March 20. Field events start at 3:30 p.m. and running begins at 4:15 p.m. The Cougars will take a small distance squad to the Bronco Roundup Distance Carnival at Casa Roble High School on Friday, March 22. Running events begin at 3:30 p.m.
