Betty Maxine (Hawkensen) Schallberger, 88, passed away on Wednesday, May 4.
She was born on July 8, 1922, in High Land Park, CA, to Carl and Opal (Brooks) Hawkensen.
She married Emil Schallberger in 1939, and in 1942 they relocated to Escalon, where she lived for the last 69 years. She was a homemaker all of her life. She prepared some delicious meals for her family over the years. Many have their own personal favorite.
In her spare time, she enjoyed crocheting and sewing. She was a very talented seamstress. The family enjoyed and appreciated her talent with the many sewing machines she had over the years. She spent a great deal of time designing and making dolls and clothes for her family and friends. Many people share fond memories and treasures from her talents over the years. Many family members also knew Betty as their barber. She could often be found in the garage giving someone a haircut.
In her later years, she enjoyed being a part of the Red Hat Society. She looked forward to putting on her red hat and purple attire and heading out on an adventure with her girlfriends.
Survivors include her five children, Louie (Judith) Schallberger of San Jose, Benny (Christy) Schallberger of Oroville, Kathy Agosta of Huntington Beach, Gary (Lety) Schallberger of Chowchilla, and Michael (Lucie) Schallberger of Escalon; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; sister, Delores Ming (Hawkensen) of Escalon, and brother Guernie (Carlene) Hawkensen of Palisade, CO.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Carl; her parents, Carl and Opal Hawkensen; her husband of 60 years, Emil Schallberger; and her great-grandson, Randy Atchison.
Visitation was Tuesday, May 10 at Deegan Funeral Chapel in Escalon.
A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, May 11 at 10 a.m., at St. Patrick's Church in Escalon.
