Fire Prompts Postponement Of Football Game
BANNER
Varsity football team members will take on the visiting Ripon Indians at Engel Field this week, with the winner claiming the Trans-Valley League championship.

Friday night’s football game, Sept. 11, against Bret Harte has been postponed until Monday night and will be played in Escalon due to the heavy smoke from the Butte Fire in the Angels Camp area.

On Thursday, officials determined the game would have to be moved from Angels Camp to Escalon because of the situation but additional acreage involved in the fire and the closure of all Calaveras and Amador County schools on Friday prompted the outright postponement of the contest. The fire had grown to over 30,000 acres by Friday morning,  more than doubling in size since Thursday night with reports of at least six homes destroyed and several thousand more threatened.

Mandatory evacuations are in effect in multiple communities affected by the fire and the game was postponed until next week.

The evening of football on Monday at Engel Field will start with the JV game at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity game at 7:30 p.m.

If any other changes occur with the game, The Times will post information on its website.
