Pam Wright and Gail Marganelli, Co-Presidents of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), Oakdale Riverbank Escalon Branch, have announced the winners of the local AAUW Speech Trek public speaking project. On Feb. 25, competing students (all from Oakdale High School) delivered their 5-6 minute original speeches on “Gender Bias and Inequality.” This challenging topic asked that the speech makers conduct research, and address the questions of what is gender bias, what is its impact on people, and why should organizations such as AAUW continue to work to change its practice?

Gaby Ceja took first place honors and was awarded a $200 cash prize, Autumn Neal placed second with a $125 cash prize, and Samantha Ho placed third with a $75 cash prize. The next step in this statewide contest is to provide a video to the State Semi-Final judges. Local first place winner, Gaby Ceja’s video has been submitted to the State Semi-Finals. A panel of judges will select the top five speeches from those submitted by other branch competitions held around California. The top three speakers will then compete in person at the AAUW State Convention on Saturday, April 16 at the San Mateo Marriott Hotel. Additional cash prizes are awarded at each stage of the competition.

The American Association of University Women advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research. Those living in Oakdale, Riverbank, or Escalon, who would like more information about this program or the local AAUW ORE branch, should contact Co-President Pam Wright at 209-988-1369.
