An early afternoon collision near the intersection of Dodds and Mariposa roads outside Escalon resulted in the death of a passenger in one of the vehicles.

According to the CHP in Stockton, the crash occurred about 12:40 p.m., with one fatality and two other vehicle occupants with major injuries.

Escalon Fire Department was dispatched to the scene as well, along with Escalon Community Ambulance crews. The victim was identified by the San Joaquin County Coroner’s Office as Alejandro Avalos, 29, of Stockton.

The CHP report indicates that a gold Infiniti sedan with two passengers – including Avalos – was traveling eastbound on Mariposa Road. A white Hyundai, meanwhile, was traveling westbound on Mariposa Road. An unrelated vehicle was stopped on eastbound Mariposa Road, yielding to the westbound white Hyundai prior to making a left turn onto eastbound Dodds Road.

“According to physical evidence and witness statements,” the CHP report said, “the driver of the gold Infiniti turned left onto eastbound Dodds Road by making a sharp left turn at a high speed while still to the rear of the stopped vehicle” instead of stopping to the rear of the vehicle and “making a safe and legal left turn” after the other vehicle also turned left. When making the left turn, the driver of the Infiniti turned left directly into the path of the westbound Hyundai. The front of the Hyundai collided broadside with the right front and rear passenger doors of the Infiniti.

The Infiniti then rotated clockwise, CHP officials said, and the right side of the vehicle collided with a high voltage power pole on the north side of Mariposa Road. The Hyundai rotated clockwise and came to rest on the north shoulder of Mariposa Road.

The right front passenger of the Infiniti sustained major injuries and was transported to San Joaquin County Hospital. Avalos was the right rear passenger and sustained fatal injuries, pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Hyundai sustained major injuries and was transported to San Joaquin County Hospital.
