Excerpts are taken from a book on loan from Gail Kroon. The book is called the "The History of Old Farmington."

The old town of Farmington, one of the oldest little towns in San Joaquin County, is located 16 miles east of Stockton on State Highway 4. In the olden days it was called the Sonora Road as it was the main route from Stockton to Sonora. Farmington was a stopping place for many of the teamsters. There were several between Stockton and Farmington. They were named quite often after the families who ran them and sometimes the miles from Stockton, for example, "The 26 Mile House," etc.

Mr. Henry Huffman had the first mule team on this Stockton-Sonora Route. The wagon is now located at Sutter's Fort in Sacramento.

The soil in and around Farmington is what is known as black adobe. Further out we find the reddish clayish soil which, at an average depth of two feet, we find moist in the middle of summer. Then beyond this we strike the gravel lands, and still beyond this we find the sandy soils.
