From "The History of Old 'Farmington' by Ruth Hewitt and Aileen Groves". The first Farmington school was located one half mile west of Farmington on the land owned by M.J. Drais. The school was established in the 1850's. The school was in session only three months of the year, March-April-May. The first teacher was William Champion. In 1870, another school was built at the same location as the first school. This school was called Shady Grove School. It was built by the same men of the community at a cost of $200.00. The school term ending June 1, 1878 had 19 girls and 19 boys attending school. In 1883, the school moved into Farmington next to the I.O.O.F. Lodge Hall. It was a one-room school and soon was too small. After much argument, it was decided to build a new two-story school west of the Railway Tracks on Sonora Road. It was erected with two schoolrooms and two hallways on the bottom floor. The hallways were designated one for girls and one for boys. On the second floor was an auditorium, with a stage and dressing rooms. The auditorium was also used for dancing and community events. On the top of the building were a cupola and a belfry, which held the bell. (This bell is now in a brick foundation in front of the Farmington Elementary School on Highway 4). The new school was dedicated May 24, 1889, with a big picnic and then a play was presented on the new stage, followed by dancing. This school was used until 1923.
