An early morning accident in the rural area outside Escalon resulted in the death of an Oakdale man on Friday, April 8.

California Highway Patrol reports indicate the man, identified as 39-year-old Rene Garcia of Oakdale, was driving his 1992 Toyota pick up eastbound on Avena Road about 7:10 a.m., approaching the intersection with Carrolton. At the same time, an 18-year-old man from Escalon was driving his 1979 Chevrolet pick up northbound on Carrolton. Authorities said Garcia failed to stop at the posted stop sign on Avena and entered the intersection directly into the path of the northbound Chevy. The front of the Chevy collided with the Toyota and both vehicles went off the roadway, coming to rest on the east side of Carrolton Road, just north of Avena.

Garcia sustained major injuries in the collision and was airlifted to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto, where he was pronounced dead as a result of the injuries sustained.

The 18-year-old had moderate injuries, according to the CHP report, and was taken by ambulance to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto, treated and released.

CHP officials said drugs or alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the collision.
