All that's left is the waiting.

Escalon High School Academic Decathlon participants have completed two weekends of work, with the awards ceremony and announcement of top honors coming tonight, Wednesday, Feb. 6.

"The awards ceremony will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Scottish Rite auditorium," said Aca Dec coach George Megenney.

Presentation of awards at the Stockton venue will hopefully see some medals for the Escalon contingent, he said.

"Out of 34 kids who participated in Aca Dec this year in varying capacities, 32 managed to make it to the county competition," Megenney added. "Everyone seemed to enjoy their time at the event and were excited about cheering on the starting team during the Super Quiz. Escalon didn't score the most points during the event, but neither did it score the least."

Students took tests this past weekend in a variety of categories, from Art to Literature, while starters also gave impromptu speeches and wrote essays during the first weekend. Megenney said the team has done well in the past and he does expect some hardware to be presented to the students during tonight's ceremony.

He also is already looking ahead.

"Right now I've already begun to focus on getting my students involved in organizing the production of a recruitment video to teach EHS students about what Aca Dec is all about," he said, hoping that will help recruit some new members.

"We're going to lose about 33 percent of our team due to the fact that about that many are seniors," he noted.
