Recent action on the pitch for Escalon has seen a mix of wins and losses for both the varsity girls and boys squads.

The Lady Cougars, coached by Jamie Peoples and Kaity French, have defeated Hughson, tied Hilmar and lost to Ripon and Livingston.

“They will be the top two,” Peoples said of the Lady Indians and Lady Wolves.

Leading Escalon in scoring so far this season is Cali Granis, who was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Ripon Christian Tournament during the holiday break and also scored a hat trick in a non-league game against Weston Ranch. She also notched goals in league games against Hughson and Hilmar.

On the varsity boys side, head coach Paul Silva said they have two wins, a loss and a tie to start league play.

They defeated Ripon by a 6-3 final, lost 5-1 to Livingston, tied Hughson 1-1 and then shut out Hilmar, 4-0.

“Our leading scorer has been Alexiz Rodriguez,” Silva said, as he as accounted for nine goals and six assists in the preseason and first four league games.

Junior Luis Flores and senior Miguel Granados have each scored five goals.

The Cougar boys are 7-5-3 overall and took fourth place in the Gregori Tournament.

Silva said they also have enjoyed getting some football players onto the pitch, getting into playing shape for soccer.

“Senior Alfonzo Gonzalez has really solidified the midfield and junior Matthew Baptista, as a center fullback, has done a tremendous job,” Silva said.

Also key to the defense is returning player, senior Misael Ronces, and junior goalkeeper Aldo Yepiz has had a strong season so far.

The boys have a bye on Wednesday and are scheduled to take on Riverbank in Friday action, Jan. 14.
