Taking a 2-1 win in 10 innings over Riverbank to start the week, the Escalon varsity Lady Cougars then came up a little short in a contest at home with Modesto Christian, splitting their games in Trans-Valley League play.

Hosting the Lady Bruins on Wednesday, April 2, the Lady Cougars gave up a run on a single and a double in the fourth but pulled even with a run in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings. Though they had chances earlier, the varsity girls couldn't bring a run in against Riverbank starter Carlye Avey until the seventh inning. Chyanne Cantal was hit by a pitch, plunked in the helmet, and was lifted for pinch runner Cynthia Freitas. She moved to second on a passed ball and then was able to score on a double by Corrie Dollarhide.

"Neither team scored in the eighth or ninth so we went to the international tiebreaker in the 10th," explained Escalon head coach Dianne Teixeira.

With Escalon able to hold Riverbank off the board in the top of the inning, they started the bottom of the 10th with Casey Schmidig at second base. She moved to third on a single and scored the winning run on a passed ball.

"We'll take it," Teixeira said of the win on the Bruin miscue. "We left 11 runners on, that hurts. We had no walks and we were swinging at some junk."

Casey Schmidig was the starting pitcher and was relieved in the fifth inning by Caitlin Brooks, who got credit for the win. Schmidig had four strikeouts; Brooks notched 11. Escalon had two runs on nine hits with one error and Riverbank had one run, five hits and one error.
