Escalon High School’s track and field team competed in the Trans-Valley League Championships on Thursday, May 2 and qualified four athletes to compete in this week’s Sac Joaquin Sections meet at Chavez High School on Wednesday, May 8.

Competing in four events, senior Zach Pickett brought home four medals. He was first in the 200m (22.86) and 400m (50.45), third in the high jump (5-07) and anchored the 4x400m relay to a third place finish. Garrett Nash, Alex Jimenez and Juan Lopez, the other members of the 4x400m relay, are also advancing to the sections meet.

“The boys worked well together and have been competitive at every meet,” said head coach Carrie Nash.

Pickett was no doubt the team’s leader, all season Nash, Jimenez and Lopez knew if they stayed close to the competition in the race, their anchor (Pickett), would finish with an impressive 400 meters and get them to place in the top finishers. That is exactly what happened Thursday when they placed third at finals.

“In a league that is stronger than it’s been in over 10 years we struggled as a team to put points on the board,” said Nash. “On a more positive note, we have a great group of kids who work hard and are consistently improving their times and marks.”
