The varsity and JV softball Lady Cougars both captured victories on the home field, hosting Hughson in Trans-Valley League action Monday, March 18.

For the varsity girls it was a back-and-forth contest with the visiting Lady Huskies, ending ultimately in a 5-4 Escalon win.

The home team took a 1-0 lead in the first, only to see Hughson go up 2-1 in the top of the second. Two runs in the bottom of that frame put Escalon back in the lead, 3-2, but Hughson got a run in the top of the third to knot the score at 3-3.

Putting a run on the board in the sixth, Hughson took a brief 4-3 lead, but Escalon got the run back in the bottom of the inning, again tying the score, this time at 4-4.

The Lady Cougars pushed the winning run across the plate in the bottom of the seventh for the 5-4 win.

For the junior varsity girls, head coach Kristin Beckman reported a final score of 22-2 in Escalon’s favor in the March 18 contest.

“The girls came together and won in four innings,” the coach explained. “Soleil Gouzenne went 2-for-4 with a single and a triple. Ryilee McNulty had a double and two walks. Madison Hagglund went 2-for-2 with two singles as well as two walks.”

Also contributing to the hit parade for Escalon were Tulsa Carnes, 3-for-4 with a double, two singles, along with reaching on an error and a walk. Adriana Marrufo was 3-for-4 with two singles and a double, Mya Scott had a single and worked out a walk. Alexis White had two walks and a single.

A road trip to Livingston originally scheduled for Wednesday, March 20 was postponed; this week the girls are scheduled to be at Hilmar on Wednesday, March 27 and then the varsity girls host Modesto Christian on Friday, March 29.
