Taking a 2-0 win off the field, Escalon's varsity soccer girls put their first Trans-Valley League contest in the win column, traveling to Riverbank for the game on Thursday, March 17.

Kara McKee netted a goal in the first half, with the assist from Araceli Gallo, and Ally Gonzales found the net in the second half, again with Gallo notching the assist.

Goalkeeper Logan La Rossa had one save.

"It was a pretty physical game," coach Jamie Peoples said. "We had a ton of opportunities, we just didn't finish."

Most of the TVL teams started play on Tuesday, but Escalon had a first game bye, opening up on the road Thursday. They instead played at Calaveras on Tuesday in a final preseason tune up and lost there, 2-0.

"It was raining the whole time, we were on a turf field and that is not our strong suit," Peoples said. "We actually scored a goal but they called it back, it was on a corner kick."

Peoples said she still isn't clear why the goal didn't count, but Calaveras ended up with the two-goal edge to take the win. Escalon had just six shots on goal. La Rossa had seven saves.

Headed into league play, Peoples did a little tinkering with positions to get McKee more involved in the offensive attack and it worked well, the senior getting the first goal of the game at Riverbank. Sierra Duran got high marks for stepping up her game, moved to sweeper and Taylor Morrow played a solid game in the midfield, as well as Gallo putting in some good work with her pair of assists.

Peoples also served as coach of the JV team this week in the absence of coach Jason Collinsworth, out sick.

They lost a 5-0 decision at Calaveras, down 3-0 at half, but played a solid second half and kept that momentum going into Thursday's league opener.

"They won 5-1 against Riverbank and that was their first win," Peoples said. "Cassidy Caton had three goals and one assist, Sage Gabba had a goal and two assists, Leslie Garcia had one goal and Carlee Vest had one assist."

Goalkeeper Cassie Murken had one save in the nets and Riverbank converted on a penalty shot to score their goal.

The girls were scheduled to play Ripon on Tuesday, after the Times went to press and will be home to host Orestimba on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
