Building up what appeared to be a commanding 3-0 lead, Escalon's varsity Lady Cougars had to hold on for the win against Bret Harte on the soccer field.

The girls hosted the Bret Harte Bullfrogs in their only game of the week, Tuesday, March 8 and escaped with a 4-3 win in the non-league action.

Escalon had a 1-0 lead at the half with a goal from Kristine Lima getting them on the board.

Two more unanswered goals came midway through the second half, as the Lady Cougars got scores from Lima and Paige Fulgieri.

"We got up 3-0, then we just got tired," said coach Craig Humrichouse. "We need to work on our conditioning."

Bret Harte got the tying goal on an indirect kick, giving the visitors new life with a few minutes to play. But Escalon's Kacey Ball scored the go-ahead goal shortly after Bret Harte tied it up, giving the lead back to the host squad. They clamped down defensively and didn't allow any more goals, taking the win.

Goalie Sarah Quiroz had five saves on the day. Lima had two goals, Fulgieri had a goal and two assists, Ball had a goal and an assist and Kara Fisher had one assist. The Lady Cougars had 12 shots on goal.

"Nikki Plott just played very, very well, she stepped up and had a great game at the halfback spot for us," Humrichouse said.

The coach noted that with the obvious breakdown on the field when team members tired, they would focus on building up their stamina as they prepare for the opening of Trans-Valley League play.

"I told them to be prepared to do a lot of running," said Humrichouse.

The girls were slated to host another Mother Lode League team, Amador, on Tuesday, March 15 after The Times went to press. They will be at home to kick off TVL play by hosting Ripon Christian at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 17.
