Escalon wrestlers got their first taste of competition for the new season on Saturday, heading to the Hughson JV Tournament.

"We brought 15 wrestlers and had six champions," said Escalon head coach Derek Scott.

Notching those first place honors were Colton Camara at 125 pounds, Tyler Lawrence, 130; Aaron Dizon, 140; Scott Nunes, 145; Carlos Algandar, 152; Garrett Wade, 160.

"We were real pleased, with Dizon, Nunes and Wade, they all looked good, they all wrestled for us last year," said Scott.

Of the newcomers, Algandar was perhaps the most impressive. The junior, who was a soccer standout for the Cougars, has also taken to wrestling.

"We were really impressed with how athletic he is," said Scott. "Tyler, that was our first time seeing him and he should be in the varsity line up and we were also impressed with how good Colton wrestled."

Taking second place in the tournament were Lestat Velasquez at 130 pounds and Danny Luna at 135.

The Cougars will travel to Ceres for a tournament on Saturday, Dec. 4, again taking many underclassmen as several weight classes will remain unfilled until football players get in their required number of practices for wrestling. The Escalon Wrestling Club also attended a tournament, going to Hughson on Sunday.

Taking fourth in the tournament was Garrett Nash and Diego Oliva came away with a third place finish. Three wrestlers were second place finishers, Carson Prim, Miguel Souza and Jake Lawrence, with Logan Webster taking first place in his weight class.

Wrestlers range in age from about 5 to the older 11- and 12-year-olds, with weight classes from roughly 48 to 100 pounds.
