Shutting out their opponent once again, Escalon's JV football team rolled to a 35-0 victory over Linden to kick off a successful Friday night Homecoming celebration.
"Joey Machado took the opening kick off 77 yards for a touchdown return and it was all downhill for Linden from there," said coach Randy Northcutt.
His Cougars amassed a total of 245 yards offensively to just 27 yards for the visiting Lions. On special teams, the JV squad piled up another 101 yards for a total of 346 on the night.
"We had 12 first downs, one passing and 11 rushing," Northcutt added. "Linden had one first down on a pass."
Escalon scored two touchdowns in the first quarter and added three more in the second. The referees opted to use a running clock in the second half with the score already at 35-0.
After a couple of miscues on that opening kickoff - the ball passed through the hands of a couple of Cougars - Machado picked it up and rumbled the 77 yards for the score. Christian Guillen added the point after for the quick 7-0 lead. Josh May scored the second touchdown of the quarter on a 5-yard run but the kick failed.
Second quarter action saw Escalon convert on an 8-yard run from quarterback Nick Aprile and May go in for the 2-point conversion to make it 21-0. May scored on a 2-yard run and the kick was good, with Machado capping off the scoring with a 16-yard run. The kick by Guillen was good for the 35-0 decision.
Escalon completed the only pass attempted on the night, an 18-yard strike from Aprile to David Anderson. The JV team rushed 39 times for 227 yards, led by May, 15 carries for 79 yards. Machado had five carries, 45 yards; Jaremy Puthoff, six for 35; Trenton Doom, five for 20; Aprile, two for 13; Ryan Ashlock, three for 16; Jeff Heide, one for 15; and Cody Cheary and Heath Dougherty each had one carry for three yards.
"We looked at their films earlier in the week and knew they were a weak team," Northcutt said. "They had three fumbles, we recovered every one and we scored on them all, we turned their turnovers into points."
The Cougars also intercepted two passes, Steve Largent returning one for 23 yards, Mike Beeman returning one for a yard.
Linden completed just two of six passes for 21 yards and rushed 11 times for a total of six yards.
With a solid 4-0 record in hand, the JV Cougars will head to Tuolumne City on Friday to face off with Summerville to close out the non-league part of their schedule. Trans-Valley League play begins with an Oct. 15 game at home with Hughson.
