With preseason just getting started, the Escalon varsity softball team took the field for two scrimmages this past week,

They hosted Amador on Tuesday, Feb. 20.

“We didn’t keep score but I think we won,” head coach Art Brooks said of seeing plenty of runs cross the plate in the contest.

Calaveras then came to town on Friday for a very chilly contest, fans in the stands bundled up against a biting wind.

“This was also a scrimmage, we’re just kind of seeing what we have out there,” Brooks explained.

There was a score kept for this scrimmage, however, which saw the visiting Calaveras team escape with a 7-6 advantage on the scoreboard.

Weather permitting, this week should be busy for the team, with three road games on the schedule. They were slated to be at Linden on Tuesday, Feb. 27; at East Union in Manteca on Wednesday, Feb. 28; and then travel to Bret Harte on Thursday, March 1.

The JV girls will make those trips as well, with new head coach Jordon Costa, an EHS grad, at the helm for this season. They did not play Amador but did get on the field for some action against Calaveras on Friday.

For the varsity team, they are the defending Sac-Joaquin Section champions and have several seniors returning including Chardae Hoskins, Molly Brown, Morgan Reider, Priscilla Nowling and Madison Kimble. Also returning are juniors Hailie Webster, Bella Strach, Lexy Underwood and sophomores Hannah Boyd and Sage Davis. Up from the JV team are juniors Leticia Gutierrez and Kayla Kemp and joining the squad is freshman Malia Babasa.

Head coach Brooks is joined by returning assistant coaches Carlos Lorigo and Caitlin Brooks.
