A tough schedule got even tougher this week, as Escalon's varsity basketball girls took on the Modesto Christian Crusaders and the Ripon Christian Knights in Trans-Valley League action. Both games went in the books as losses for the varsity squad.

They played host to Modesto Christian on Monday, Feb. 4 and couldn't contain the taller, more physical squad, suffering a 73-21 setback.

Still, it wasn't a total loss, said coach Kristie Cathcart, who has seen her team improve on their point total each time out this season against the Crusaders.

"Our goal was to score 20 points and we scored 21," Cathcart said. "We just have a hard time bringing the ball up the court against them."

Modesto Christian scored 19 points in the first quarter and 22 in the second, with Escalon netting eight in the first, four in the second to trail 41-12 at the half. Third quarter scoring was 14-4 in favor of MC, 18-5 for the Crusaders in the fourth.

Leading the way for Escalon was Kaylan Aufdermaur, who scored 11 points on the night.

"She got a lot of baskets inside," Cathcart explained, noting that Aufdermaur fought underneath for the offensive boards and got many of her points off putbacks.

Rachel Leal had six points, with two each from Misty Hipsher and Katie Kaech.

At Ripon Christian on Thursday, Feb. 7, the varsity girls lost a 45-29 contest, with one player putting in 22 points against them.
