While both the JV and varsity Escalon Lady Cougars fell in their regular season finale soccer games, the varsity girls will be on the road for a first round playoff game. The JV ended its campaign with the Feb. 12 contest at home.

VARSITY

Escalon’s varsity squad lost Monday to visiting Hilmar by a 2-0 final.

“It was a hard fought game, intense, it got a little out of control,” coach Jamie Peoples said of the contest. “The girls played tough.”

Lily Franks had three saves in goal. On the other side of the field, the Lady Cougar offense couldn’t find a way to get the ball in the net.

“We had great play by Jazzy Smith on defense and Gabby Goodman has been playing great the second half of league,” said Peoples.

The varsity girls finished third in Trans-Valley League play behind Hilmar and Ripon.

The squad made the Sac-Joaquin Section Division 5 playoffs and are scheduled to play on the road for the opening round. Escalon, the number six seed, is to play at number 3 West Campus in an afternoon game on Wednesday, Feb. 21. The winner of that game moves on to face the winner of the number two seed Ripon vs. number seven seed Capital Christian contest, with the second round game on Friday, Feb. 23 at the higher seed’s school site.

JUNIOR VARSITY

The final game of the season for the JV Lady Cougars also went down as a shutout loss, falling to visiting Hilmar by a 3-0 final.

“We had opportunities to score but we could never finish them,” said head coach Jen Schmidt. “Overall the season was great and the girls worked hard and had fun.”

The JV girls compiled a 7-3 record in TVL play.
