Hitting the course Wednesday for the Trans-Valley League cross country finals, Escalon saw plenty of solid performances.

“Except for one athlete, everyone on the team ran their fastest time of the season for that course,” noted head coach Rick Heflin. “Setting your personal course record on the last league meet is the way to end your season.”

Frosh/soph girls tied for first with Hughson. Since Escalon didn’t have a sixth girl in the race, Hughson won the tie-breaker. Leading the Cougars were Lizeth Calderon placing 5th in 15:01, next was Gabby Rigg in 6th at 15:17, 7th Emily McPherrin at 15:30, 14th Cady Wing in 16:28, 26th Angelica Liv in 18:22.

“Varsity girls placed fourth in a very competitive race. Sierra Hernandez was 11th in 21:31, right behind her was Yajaira Salinas in 13th place at 21:41,” Heflin said.

In 18th was Marisol Aguayo in 22:20, 21st was Jackie Lau in 22:26, 26th was Veronica Grajeda in 22:48. Rounding out the top seven were Farley Moore 23:49 and Nicole Luis 24:09.

Varsity boys placed third as a team.

“In 7th and 8th places were Kyle Jimenez and Zack Gardner at 17:54 and 17:55,” said Heflin.

Eddy Calderon was 13th in 18:20, 21st was Luga Mendoza in 19:10, 35th was John Rivara in 20:10, and rounding out the top 7 for boys were John Lunn and Ryan Schuurman in 20:25 and 20:39.

“Wednesday was also Senior Night,” Heflin said of recognizing athletes at the TVL meet. “Escalon honored Kyle Jimenez, Ryan Schuurman, John Rivara, Luga Mendoza, Nicole Luis, Veronica Grajeda, Avery Mello, Sierra Hernandez, Farley Moore, Flor Algandar.”

Rivara, Schuurman, Moore, Luis, Hernandez, Mello and Mendoza have run for Escalon all four years.
